How to Combine WORDPRESS and Social Media

Anyone who has planned and realized his web presence with a lot of effort would also like to welcome visitors to the website or online shop and share content or sell products. If your pages are already found by the search engines, the first step is done. However, by connecting to social networks such as Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter or Xing, you generate further interested parties and benefit from interesting content being shared virally.

For the content management system WordPress, there are various plugins that you can integrate into your website to add so-called "like buttons" to articles or pages, or to connect your content with your own social media presence.

What do I have to consider when using social media plugins?

Despite the great free advertising opportunity offered by connecting to social networks, you should remember that too many plugins can increase the load time of your website. Therefore, be sparing with the use of extensions. Furthermore, you should observe the data protection guidelines when using social media plugins and familiarize yourself with the current legal conditions, which are regulated in the "Telemedia Act and in the Law against Unfair Competition", especially if you run your website commercially.

Point out in the data protection declaration or in a disclaimer that social media buttons, such as the "Like-Button" of Facebook, are integrated on your website and that data is transferred as a result. You will find corresponding sample data protection declarations on the Internet.

The 2-click buttons, which only send data to the operator of a social network after the social media buttons have been clicked for the first time and the transfer has been confirmed by the second click, are intended to provide more data protection. The website visitor can thus decide whether he or she agrees to the data transfer.

However, even the 2-click solution is not 100% secure as long as it is not clear what data will be collected. So far there is no satisfactory solution to this problem. Hence the tip: As a website or blog operator, keep yourself constantly up to date by reading relevant blogs, newsletters or magazines.

The plugin "2 Click Social Media Buttons

The plugin "2 Click Social Media Buttons" adds buttons for Facebook, Google +, Twitter, Pinterest, Xing, LinkedIn, Flattr and t3n to the post pages of your WordPress installation. The plugin is free and multilingual.

To use "2 Click Social Media Buttons", click on "Plugins" in the menu bar in the administration area and then on "Install". In the "Install Plugins" window that opens, enter the plug-in name "2 Click Social Media Buttons" in the search mask and start the search by clicking on "Search Plugins".

After a successful search, the plugin will be displayed in a list. Click on "Install" below the plug-in name to start the installation process.

When the installation is finished, you will receive a status message. Click on "Activate this plugin".

To configure the plugin, open the entry "Settings" in the main menu and click on "2-Click-Buttons".

In the "Settings for 2-Click Social Media Buttons," you can make all adjustments that you need for your website. In the "General" tab, select which networks should be displayed in which areas of your website and whether they should appear before or after the posts.

In the "Buttons" section you can set the language and the names of the buttons.

In the tab "Info texts" you can add your own information texts on data protection conformity or adopt the existing sample texts in German.

In "Miscellaneous" you can upload an image that will be used as a placeholder for Facebook, Google + and Pinterest if no image is available for display in a post.

In addition, "F.A.Q" answers questions about data protection and the use of the plugin.

The "Facebook Like Privacy Button

If you only need a privacy button for Facebook, you should take a look at the "Facebook Like Privacy Button". Although the plugin is already from 2011, it is compatible with WordPress version 2.8. and higher and worked with WordPress version 3.9.1. During the test, it also worked with the WordPress version 3.9.1.

However, the extension cannot be found via the plugin search in the administration area of the WordPress installation but must be downloaded from the plugin page.

After downloading, click on "Plugins", "Install" in the main menu of the administration area and in the window "Install Plugins" that opens, click on "Upload". In the next window click on "Browse" and select the downloaded file "". Then start the installation process by clicking on "Install".

After a short time, the plugin is installed and you will receive a status message. Click on "Activate this plugin" here if you want the button to be displayed on the post pages.

The plugin "Facebook Like Privacy Button" inserts an "FB Like" button below your posts. When a visitor clicks on it, a pop-up window opens with an explanation about privacy. Only when "OK" is clicked here is a connection to Facebook established. Alternatively, the process can be ended by clicking on "Cancel".

Sharing posts on social networks with "Jetpack by

If you want to share your own posts on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, LinkedIn or Yahoo! it is worth installing the universal plugin "Jetpack by". After successful installation, click on the new "Jetpack" button in the main menu and then on Settings. In the window that opens, scroll down a bit and move the mouse over "Publish" to activate the hidden buttons. Then click on "Configure".

In the next "Sharing Settings" window, you can connect your website to your preferred networks by clicking on the "Connect" button next to a social service and authorize the extension. You can deactivate the connection at any time.

With the plugin, it is also possible at this point to add "Share Buttons" to your posts. Please note, however, that these are only simple buttons with 1-Click functions, which are not privacy-compliant.

"Jetpack by" offers additional functions for connecting to your networks. For example, you can connect your Google + profile to your posts via "Jetpack" and "Settings" or display a Twitter timeline or entries from RSS or Atom feeds on the start page via the menu item "Additional Sidebar Widgets".
